David has raced since the early 1970s in club sport and hill climbs. He did one season in the Shell Sport. David got back into Motorsport in 1997 when his son and competed at the Targa in a Mexico Escort. He purchased a twin cam Escort and competed for 10 years then purchased the present car from Roy Harrington in 2004. David has been racing with Historic Muscle Cars doing selected meetings including the Timaru 50th anniversary 2018.

David Thompson - 1968 Ford Escort

1968 Ford Escort:

Mk 1 Escort built by Stone Brothers and raced in Bank New South Wales series in 1970s as a 1300 cc Twin Cam. Then the Escort was raced by Roy Harrington in the Shell Sport series where he won 1982 and 1983 Under 2 Litre Championship. David purchased the car from Roy as a complete car so rebuild was relatively easy with no parts missing. Engine is 1598 cc Brian Hart twin cam built by Bruce Manon. Gearbox is a 4 speed Ford Rocket box with an English axle. Wheels are genuine magnesium mini lights 13 x 10 rear and 13 x 9 fronts, car painted as it last raced.
